Piero Golia’s Luminous Sphere – installed on top of The Standard Hotel in Hollywood
Italian conceptual artist Piero Golia’s glowing orb sculpture, Luminous Sphere, was recently installed atop the roof of The Standard Hotel in Hollywood. Apparently, it will only illuminate when the artist is in town. It’s not clear how often that’ll be, but according to collaborator, architect Peter Zellner, Golia is in LA “a few weeks a month on and off.” Golia told the New York Times last May that the orb will be “a secret communication code” for friends curious about his whereabouts and something of a cipher for passers-by. “Maybe a commuter who drives past it every day will decide that it lights up on sunny days, or on rainy days — it’s a form open to urban legend,” Golia added.
Piero Golia’s Luminous Sphere is a temporary intervention in the public domain as part of L.A.P.D (Los Angeles Public Domain), LA><ART’s Public Art Initiatives with support from ForYourArt, which produces artistic and curatorial interventions in experimental contexts.
